Now that Im 54 and amentorto many young people, one of the first pieces of advice I share is to take time away from the world to really sink into yourself and the wellspring of creativity thats inside each of us.Living in Idaho and Utah for most of my life, Ive met many people who can just go off into the mountains and gain clarity and creativity. That is so bedrngnis me. I love the outdoors and findinspirationin nature, but camping has never been my forte I certainly do not find it relaxingWhen I really want to go within and do deep creative work, I need to be put in time-out. Retreats create that for me.That special time in retreat, and now in my daily meditation practice, is like going on a date wi th my own soul. In the beginning, they were sparse, a bitawkward, and restrictive. But as Ive gotten older, I treat myself to retreats with softer accommodations, amenities, and delicious food. This helps me remember that my time away is about being kind to myself. From this gentler, safer space, I can connect and watch my emotions rise and fall, allow my thoughts to flow through me, and give myself permission to feel and to heal. I believe our souls are here for the purpose of healing, and retreats are how I honor that journey. Its done wonders for me as a human being, as well as for my business.I became curious about meditation after I heard the Dali Lama speak in Sun Valley, Idaho, almost 13 years ago.All of the running around Id done was starting to catch up with me drinking too much, not making healthy decisions in my relationships, and feeling stuck with my business.I began to notice that when I did take time to slow down, I felt really uncomfortable with myself. After Dali La mas talk, I decided to do something about it. I started researching and reading about meditation and mindfulness.I attended my first three-day silent retreat at Spirit Rock in the Bay Area. If you think silent retreats sound like meditation on steroids, you arent wrong.It was brutal. All it took was one day to notice how crazy my mind really was I was alone with my never-ending stream of thoughts, including many not-so-nice thoughts about myself. For the next two days, all I could think about was how to get out of there. I concocted story after story of what I could say to be released. Finally, I realized what I really wanted was to run away from myself. As the third day came to a close, I was hooked. Something inside me woke up and started calling me. This time, it wasnt the voices in my head it was my heart.That first retreat was a pretty simple structure - Vipassana meditation - and it exposed me to some powerful teachers and life-changing ideas. Generally, on a silent retreat , you only speak when conversing with your teacher, and sometimes, thats only at the conclusion of the retreat. And those high-quality accommodations I mentioned earlier? Those arent typical of rigid meditation retreats, so be sure to check before you sign up if that matters to you.Even though it was really hard those first two days, I loved getting a taste of the creativity that comes from sitting quietly for long stretches. It inspired me to sign up for a weeklong retreat not long after. Im glad I did, because I found that after I allowed my mind to jump around for a few day without engaging, I could finally start to let go, and thats when the magic really happens.In 2012, I was about to sign a lease to open my third LunchboxWax waxing salon. Something kept me from signing before I left for my retreat. While there, a moment of clarity struck me my business is not just a waxing business it is so much more. I started to believe that I could use my life experiences to help others. T he floodgates opened, and I started to visualize a business created with the sole purpose of empowering young women. I knew deep down that a lot of people were going to want to be a parte of this. The idea to franchise came to me I still dont know where the first thought came from, and I dont question it. When I got out of my retreat, I immediately started researching. I was lit up everything inside me said this was the right path. LunchboxWax was going to become a franchise. Ive never looked back and have learned (and re-learned) to always listen to my gut. My best big ideas still come to me during stillness.We can all do unbelievable work with a clear mind.Once I established a regular meditation practice, I began to see all the creativity I missed in regular life because I couldnt seem to slow down. I started writing and painting again after 30 years of being too busy for that sort of thing, even though I loved it. Taking time for silence is much bigger than just not talking. To me, its about opening up to creativity, whether thats writing, art, or business. Now, twice a year, I carve out a week for a silent retreat.With more than 10 years of daily meditation and biannual silent retreats as my foundation, Im nowpassionateabout incorporating mindfulness into my business, including offering mindfulness training for waxologists. In fact, opinions are what fuel momentum- all ideas, plans, and decisions begin and end with opinions, and if you consistently refrain from voicing yours, youll be doing both your employer and your career a disservice.1. Youll Appear mora ConfidentConfidence is never a badeanstalt thing to have. In a job interview, it can make you seem like a more appealing cand idate. In a deal negotiation, it can make you seem like more of an authority. In a meeting, it can make you look like a more important player. Speaking your opinion openly makes you appear more confident, and that effect actually increases depending on the degree of controversy associated with that opinion. For example, if you strongly disagree with everyone else in the room, youll appear more confident than if you go the safe route and openly agree. That confidence will build over time and help propel your career forward.2. You Never Know What Could ChangeA common reason for employees holding their opinions back is a belief that those opinions dont matter- that they wont be listened to, or they wont be acted upon. For example, if a worker is concerned with the effects of a new operations policy, he or she may refuse to voice his or her opinion under the impression that the policy wont change, regardless of circumstances. However, there is no guarantee that your opinion will be igno red or cast aside. If you speak up, your voice might make the difference, but if you hold back, youll never know what positive outcomes you could be missing out on.3. Youll Drive DiscussionEven if your opinion isnt taken into serious consideration, the fact that you brought it up can still drive a meaningful discussion. For example, if you offer a possible solution in a group meeting, the group may collectively decide that your idea isnt worth pursuing. However, even so, your opinion could generate some alternative lines of thinking and new perspectives that keep the conversation moving forward. Ultimately, discussion leads to results, and the more opinions there are to feed that discussion, the faster and more efficiently youll eventually get to those results.4. If Youre Wrong, Youll Learn WhyLets say you arent sure that your opinion is valid, or that you know for a fact that theres something off with it. This could be an indication that your opinion isnt grounded or isnt relevant, or it could just be your psyche messing with you. If you want to find out, you have to voice your opinion. If your instincts are right and there is something wrong about your opinion- such as a false assumption or incorrect data- the other people around you will let you know. You wont appear foolish instead, the situation becomes a genuine learning experience and you can walk away the wiser.5. You Could Be the Voice of the MajoritySometimes, workers are intimidated to voice their opinions because they feel like theyre the only ones who feel a certain way. For example, if youre sitting in a meeting listening to your boss talk about a new marketing approach and youre concerned that the approach will be ineffective, you might clam up if you feel like the only one of a dissenting mind. However, everybody else in the meeting could be thinking the very same thing. If you voice your opinion, you could give a voice to everyone else. You may have more support than you realize.6. The Risks A re LowMost of us have a tendency to imagine worst-case scenarios when faced with an intimidating prospect. When you imagine voicing your opinion, you could envision yourself getting fired or humiliated in front of the entire company. In reality, these possible outcomes are extremely rare- the risks of making your opinion known are much lower than they might seem. If your workplace culture is the type that would support firing an employee because he or she voiced an opinion, you probably shouldnt be working there anyway.7. Regretting Action Is Better Than Regretting InactionThis is a fundamental principle to remember in many areas of your life. Its possible that you voice your opinion and live to regret it, but its also possible that you keep your mouth shut and regret not saying anything. Ultimately, our regrets of inaction are much more severe than our regrets of action, meaning keeping your mouth shut is actually the more likely regret of the two. Take a chance- youll feel good ab out it, even if it doesnt turn out how you intended.Breaking past that intimidation barrier can be tough, especially if youre used to holding onto your opinions, but its vital that you practice regularly speaking your mind in your career. While we cant make interviewing any less grueling, we can get you prepped for success and ready to nail the whole job responsibilities discussion, but only if you keep readingHighlight your Strengths (No Fibbing Allowed)As an interviewee you should always be selling yourself to your new potential employer. Questions about job responsibilities tend to be open ended so use the oppo rtunity to highlight the areas you really shine. Managerial and leadership duties and tasks that show off your ability to take initiative are interview gold mines. Be careful not to stretch the truth here. Saying you managed a team of 10 when you really only had one assistant can come back to bite you if your new employer follows up with your current job. It can also set you up for failure when your new employer uses it to set expectations for your very first day. Promote skills and duties that you actually had and come off looking confident and qualified.Be a Great Fit for the PositionThis tip requires a little initiative on your part but will have huge returns in impressing your potential new employer. Review the job description for the position youre interviewing carefully and do some external searching on similar positions if need be. Use this info to highlight responsibilities that will allow you to hit the ground running the first day on the job. Stress your ability to multitask and work in an organized and thorough manner without direct supervisor intervention in order to really fit the bill.Similarly, if youre interviewing for a technical position, even in an entry level role, be sure to let your employer know about the prior responsibilities you had in that particular technology field. Talk about your ability to interpret complicated data, read manuals or be innovative in your problem solving. Google recommendsusingCodeLab, Quora, and Stack Overflow to find practice coding questions, as Cracking the Coding Intervi ew. Depending on which Google site you interview with, youll most likely have the option to code on a Chromebook or whiteboard. Test your code and make sure its easily readable, with no bugs of course.Coding.If youre applying for a technical job, Google expects you to know one programming language well. They prefer C++, Java, Python, Go, or C. You also will be expected to know APIs, Object Orientated Design and Programming, how to test your code, and be able to come up with corner cases and edge cases for code. Google emphasizes an understanding of concepts rather than memorization.Algorithms. Google expects you to know the complexity of an algorithm and how you can improve or change it.Google uses the following algorithms to solve problems sorting, divide-and-conquer, dynamic programming/memoization, greediness, recursion or algorithms linked to a specific data structure. Google suggests knowing Big-O notations and coming ready to discuss complex algorithms like Dijkstra and A*.Sor ting. Google recommends that you are familiar with common sorting functions and whether or not theyre efficient with different kinds of input data. Know data structures inside and out, including what algorithms go along with each data structure.Mathematics. Depending whos interviewing you, you might be asked basic discrete math questions. While it allows you to apply to multiple jobs, it will cut you off at three jobs within a 30-day window.
